Mobility - Integrating the Mobile Workforce

The Mobility suite of applications was developed for Mnetics, Europe's leading mobile data networks solutions integrator, by The Fifth Dimension (5D).

Mobility is a suite of integrated mobile application modules that has been specifically developed to help businesses realise tangible benefits from enhancing the effectiveness of their mobile workforce. The Mobility Suite focuses on the information collected by the mobile workforce, in real-time, and how it can be most efficiently utilised to support the overall business operation.

Mnetics recognised that every organisation would have different requirements and required a flexibile solution to accommodate those needs. Mobility solutions include these core areas:

  • Mobile applications
  • Datacoms and Synchronisation Services
  • Database Services
  • User interface

Mobility solutions deploy mobile terminals and devices, which can range from simple hand-held terminals to fully functional PC devices, for use by field staff. These terminals can easily be interfaced to and control a variety of devices such as integrated laser and image scanners to telematics and vehicle recording systems. A Mobility application running on the terminal, controls user action and facilitates communication to and from base. Terminal solutions can be supplied, using a number of different communication protocols such as RF, GSM, SMS and GPRS.

The information gathered within a Mobility solution can be made available to various users within the business and also to customers and suppliers. This information can be delivered through the company's host system utilising Mobility Customer Server, or over the Internet through secure Mobility Internet Server.

Mobility Software Architecture

The Mobility Suite utilises industry standard tools from Microsoft as its foundation, allowing customers and integrators to interface to Mobility-based systems:

  • ASP.NET running under IIS for the desktop user interface
  • On-line mobile devices for warehouse scanning, running VB.NET applications on the server
  • Intermittently connected mobile devices for delivery run access with electronic proof of delivery and signature capture
  • Centrally hosted SQL Server 2000 database

Interfaces to external systems can be achieved through XML messaging, shared database access or data import and export.
